One of the biggest mistakes that I made when we moved into our current home decades ago, was not understanding the importance of scale and proportion.
Just one of many examples of this was the 3 VERY LARGE area rugs I was convinced we needed in order to make our fully hardwood main level more "cozy". Great in concept, a total fail in reality. What actually ended up happening, is we felt closed in and it added clutter and chaos to the space. We have since opted for much smaller rugs, and without texture. This has allowed our space to feel not only less hectic, but also more functional. My children can more easily play and still have that cozy feel.
Our dining room got a complete revamp when we added board and batten and chose to add navy to the walls (which I LOVE). When we did this, I decided it was time to purchase a rug that better fit the room size. I can't tell you what a difference this has made and cannot stress enough the importance of making sure that the items we choose to fill our space with actually fit. When we're able to strike this balance, it is truly life changing!
